Alcatel-Lucent unveiled for the first time seamless access to TV channels delivered via 3G or broadcast networks, on a single device.
The event took place at 3GSM World Congress 2007.
This single device allows viewers to seamlessly access and browse among a selection of 3G-based TV channels as well as broadcast TV channels using the S-Band (2.2 GHz). The terminal used is a Pocket PC-powered PDA. The S-band capability of the terminal is achieved thanks to an S-Band chipset provided by DiBcom.
Users will be able to interact with the content of all the 3G and broadcast Mobile TV channels available on the terminal. This achievement is opening the way to a truly interactive and personalized Mobile TV experience for the mass market and to the provisioning of new services offered as a complement to mobile TV such as voting, content downloading or mobile commerce. These features also enable the delivery of personalized advertisements to Mobile TV viewers.
This demonstration illustrates how Alcatel-Lucent’s “Unlimited Mobile TV” solution, based on 3G and on the forthcoming DVB-SH broadcast Mobile TV standard, is turning into reality just one year after its inception at 3GSM 2006.
Additionally, for the first time in a public trade show, Alcatel-Lucent is demonstrating plain broadcast Mobile TV in the S-Band using SAGEM myMobileTV handsets.
Olivier Coste, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile broadcast activities declared: “For the first time in the industry, Alcatel-Lucent is enabling a compelling Mobile TV end-user experience combining unicast and broadcast Mobile TV channels connected to the same service platform on the same handset. Leveraging Mobile TV, interactivity and personalization will enable the generation of new services, additional revenues and new advertising models.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s partners for Mobile TV include: Abertis, Archos, DiBcom, Envivio, Expway, Qtek, Nagravision, NXP, Sagem Communication, Samsung Electronics, Streamezzo, TeamCast and UDcast.
