Toshiba announced the first 1TB HD-DVD unit which will be released on July 14th, 2006.
Toshiba was also the first to release a HD-DVD player back in April and now tries to push the HD-DVD products further.
Their HD-DVD RD-A1 is in fact a super-receiver. Or a digital video recorder with a spice of HD-DVD. And this is not all. To make the things more appealing, RD-A1 had a disk drive of 1TB (yeah, you read one Tera Byte), analog and digital receiver. It has HDMI output terminal, a 5.1 audio system output and a Ethernet terminal just to name only a few of the outputs.
You can record on the HDD but you can also use as media HD DVD-R (single sided 1 layer 15GB/single sided 2 layer 30GB) and DVD-RAM (single sided 1 layer 4.7GB/both sides 1 layer 9.4GB). You can record up to 92 hours of content onto the HDD, 115 minutes on a single sided DVD-R and 230 minutes on a double sided HD-DVD-R.
There is still a couple of bad news. The video recorder will stay only in Japan as Toshiba has no wish to sell it outside Japan. And there is another bad news: the price. It seems that RD-A1 will cost about $3500.
And here you can find a translated page of RD-A1 details from Toshiba Japan.
