TeliaSonera and Alcatel-Lucent Deploy 100Mbps Access Network in Finland

Alcatel-Lucent and Nordics operator TeliaSonera announced the deployment of the first 100Mbps VDSL2-based access network in Finland, enabling the delivery of a full-blown (high-definition) IPTV service offering across the country.

TeliaSonera’s fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) architecture makes use of fiber cables that are trenched from the operator’s central offices to the basement of (apartment) buildings. From there, the end-users are offered very high-speed broadband applications over the existing, in-building copper wires. The architecture is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s 7354 ISAM FTTB Remote Unit – which has specifically been designed for cabinet and multiple dwelling unit (MDU) deployments. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a range of professional services related to the network roll-out project.

“We will be the first operator in Finland to provide customers with an access connection that can peak up to 100Mbps in the existing building copper wiring,” says Jussi Salminen, Vice President in Broadband Services Finland at TeliaSonera. “This is a major differentiator on the Finnish market, allowing us to significantly grow our market share – all while introducing to our customers the latest triple-play services. Alcatel-Lucent’s 7354 ISAM FTTB Remote Unit perfectly suited our business case, as it allows us to bring fiber to the most economic point by easily connecting in-building copper wires to our fiber network.”

Alcatel-Lucent delivers its 7354 ISAM FTTB Remote Unit, a compact full-service IP access node for Ethernet MDU and cabinet deployments, designed to deliver up to 100 Mbps over VDSL2. The 7354 is part of the ISAM family and allows operators to offer the same service quality from FTTB as from central office and fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) deployments. It is complemented by Alcatel-Lucent’s 5520 Access Management System (AMS), the next-generation element management system covering the entire ISAM product portfolio, encompassing DSL as well as fiber-based access networks. Alcatel-Lucent also provides a number of professional services to TeliaSonera, including consulting, design and maintenance.

“Alcatel-Lucent will help TeliaSonera realize their firm go-to-market objectives,” adds Pertti Tukia, General Manager, Alcatel-Lucent Finland. “This contract shows once again that Alcatel-Lucent leads in terms of next-generation broadband access, and that we have all technologies at hand to grow our customers’ networks in a way that makes most sense to them.”
