According to IDC Q206 Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker which is an analysis regarding the server market, Sun saw its year-to-year server market revenue share grow by 1.7 points.
At the same time, the other top-four server vendors lost share which allowed Sun to gain one position on the top. This way, Sun surpassed Dell and moved to place 3 in the top.
Sun was the only top-four server vendor to achieve year-to-year server factory revenue growth, posting a 15.5% gain.
In worldwide UNIX revenue, Sun established itself as the top server vendor by gaining four points of market share while its two nearest competitors declined. Sun now accounts for more than half of UNIX server shipments. Sun’s year-to-year UNIX revenue was up 11.8%. Sun also continued to achieve significant growth in its x64 (x86, 64-bit) server line.
“We have our foot firmly on the accelerator and are leaving our competitors in the dust,” said John Fowler, executive vice president, Sun’s systems group. “Over the past year we’ve brought to market a significant number of new products — including x64, UltraSPARC(R) IV+, and Sun Fire(TM) CoolThreads servers — and the customer response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our investment in innovation is really paying off as we now have the best product line-up in the company’s history.”
Sun and NVIDIA signed a deal according to which NVIDIA has been selected to power new x64 platforms from Sun Microsystems, including servers such as the Sun Fire X2100 M2, Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4600, and the Sun Blade 8000, as well as the Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation.
Sun’s vision in the development of technologies is “The Network Is The Computer” and it seems that it helps it to become better and better.
