GreenBorder technologies managed to create a sandbox for Internet Explorer.
What is a sandbox? Well, a sandbox is an application that uses virtualization to protect the system. For example, let’s say that you are downloading a program with a virus. If that program is running in a sandbox the program will execute but the virus won’t be able to access the system so it can’t infect it.
The same thing was developed by GreenBorder with their GreenBorder Pro which will be released today.
“We provide a safe environment for running IE,” said Jim Fulton, vice president of marketing at Mountain View, Calif.-based GreenBorder. “You can literally go to any Web site, even if it is full of exploits, full of nasty stuff, (and) GreenBorder will keep it isolated from your machine.”
As you know, Internet Explorer is probably the web browser with the most security holes. This makes it unsafe as you surf the Internet. This way you get all king of malware, spyware, key blogging and surely viruses if you visit odd websites.
But now, with GreenBorder Pro, the malware can’t do much. And when you log out or you choose “Clean and Reset GreenBorder”, the malware is removed. Just because it was in a box and couldn’t infect the computer.
But what if you really want to run or install a program taken from the internet? If you are sure that the application is safe you can remove temporary the shield between Internet Explorer and your system and this will allow you to install the program and to remain installed after logg off.
As for phishing, or a very common example, the Nigerian scam, the problem resides with the user. Because if you believe the scam, nobody can prevent you to take your wallet and make the Nigerians rich.
“We keep Internet pickpockets from stealing the wallet out of your pocket. But if you take it out and hand your money over to them, that is not something we can help with,” Fulton said.
“So, if you are a gullible individual who is likely to think that some Nigerian really does have $450 million to give you, GreenBorder isn’t likely to help,” “If you’re a frequent shareware or freeware site user, it is not likely to help you.”
The price for GreenBorder is $49.95 per year. Also you can get a shield for files sent and received via instant messaging or run from USB drives costs an additional $14.95 per year.
