Apple Looses Ground In Europe Over iPhone Exclusive Deals
Published On 21st November 2007 @ 12:22 In Apple, Personal Tech, Multimedia | No Comments
As we all know, the iPhone revolution has recently started to conquer Europe as the Apple’s gadget was released in the UK, France and Germany. Taking advantage of the tremendous success iPhone had even before it was officially put on the market, Apple closed deals with certain mobile operators promising to sell the iPhone exclusively through their customers network and also demanding a share of the new subscriptions.
The technique worked well in the US and the UK where AT&T and O2 have won the contract and are selling iPhones which are locked to the seller’s network.
Unfortunately for Apple, France and Germany don’t have such permissive laws and Apple’s exclusivity contracts are under jeopardy. Last month, Apple was forced by French law to promise that consumers could buy a version of its iPhone without having to be locked into a long-term contract with Orange, the only mobile phone operator offering the new device in France.
And just recently, Vodafone won the first step in a legal case against T-Mobile over its exclusive deal to sell the iPhone there. The laws in these countries protect consumers from being forced to buy a product on the condition that they buy something else as well. Vodafone operates Vodafone Germany, the No. 2 German carrier while T-Mobile is the industry leader with 34 million customers.
The selling of unlocked iPhones will certainly threats Apples deals with the carriers as they share the monthly revenue that carriers generate with the iPhone.
