Google Maps Available at Gas Stations

The days when motorists get lost in big cities are almost over as all they will soon be able to get directions while fueling up their cars at the gas station. The new gas pumps from Gilbarco Veeder-Root come equipped with a touchscreen displaying a Google Maps interface which motorists can use to find their destination.

There is a catch, though. Motorists will not be able to search for any destination they want but instead will be limited to predefined destination which will be chosen by the gas station’ owner. The motorists will be able to access directions to local points of interest. This would include places such as restaurants, hospitals, hotels, or landmarks.

Although there will be no ads to the service, the gas owners will be able to work with local retailers to set up coupons that the drivers can print out.

Even though is not to much use for motorists as they only see predefined locations, the service may evolve and may eventually give full directions to any location as well as giving the possibility to order something at the pump and have it waiting for them at the store after they finish filling up.

The initial rollout is at 3,500 pumps, and unless there’s demand for it there are no plans to produce more.
