Dell AMD Based Desktops Now A Reality
Published On 18th August 2006 @ 10:18 In Hardware, Business | No Comments
Since Dell started walking down the road of changes, here is another news regarding the future of the company. After [1] all the rumors that Dell will use AMD processors, at their financial statement press release they confirmed that the Dimension series will have AMD based models. They will also introduce a two-socket and multi-processor server using AMD Opteron processors by the end of the year.
Although Dell failed to go into detail on how many product lines within the Dimension family would be introduced or what processors would be used, speculation has been that Sempron and Athlon 64 X2 processors will be used. Considering that AMD [2] dropped the prices, Dell is probably happy to work with AMD.
On the server market, things will change a little since Intel released Woodcrest, their latest server CPU. For desktop, Intel released Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme which gained the first place thanks to their performance and price.
Don’t consider that AMD is just sitting and waiting to lose the market on Intel’s behalf after it managed to reach such a big market share. On August 15, AMD announced its new Opteron Socket F processors which take advantage of DDR2 memory and a new socket design. With speeds from 1.8GHz to 2.8GHz and with HE models which consume only 55 watts, AMD is poised not to lose the battle. Mid-2007 will also witness the launch of [3] quad-core Opterons which will compete with Intel’s Woodcrest. In they will manage to outperform it, the tides will turn in AMD’s favor.
