MySpace Guardian Toolbar Available

Published On 1st August 2006 @ 09:21 In Security, Internet | No Comments

The toolbar is targeted to both children and parents because this toolbar has many features designed to help children and parents track activity on the child’s MySpace page, while also providing awareness of sexual predators.

MySpace Guardian toolbar notifies the user of additions to their MySpace page and provides a quick reference to sexual predator information, including a pictorial search of sex offenders and maps of sex offenders in their neighborhood. Parents or children can quickly access the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) Cybertip line to notify the authorities of any suspected sex offender activities.

“Children benefit greatly from being online, but they can also be targets of sexual exploitation,” said Carl Perkins, president of PBHLLC. “We believe that the MySpace Guardian Toolbar gives kids a way to stay in touch with their MySpace page and have quick access to resources to help protect them from sexual predators.”

“The threat from online predators is very real,” stated Charles Lloyd, president of IP Marketing. “According to the Department of Justice, 1 in 5 kids received a sexual approach or solicitation over the Internet in the past year. We believe that by enabling kids with a useful tool to manage their MySpace account, this brings awareness of sexual predators and will enable them to have a much safer online experience.”

MySpace Guardian toolbar gives parents useful tools like the ability to search directly from the toolbar in their browser from the search engine of their choice and conveniently make or receive Skype calls directly from their browser.

According to a recent study conducted by Cox Cable in cooperation with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), over 61% of 13 to 17 year olds have a personal profile on sites like MySpace, Friendster, or Xanga and half have posted pictures of themselves.

Additionally one-third of teens surveyed say that they are considering meeting face-to-face with someone they’ve met from the Internet and 14% say they’ve already had such an encounter. With limited information, such as an alias or approximate age, children can rapidly search predator photos to identify predators and report improper online behavior.

All this makes the teen very vulnerable especially with the current trend that pushes teen into dating with older people because “it’s cool” or they agree to do things crazy just to be different, just to do something that they consider will gain their friends admiration. And this includes considering having sex with older people, getting a tattoo, etc.
