Chip Helps People Move

Published On 20th March 2006 @ 16:47 In SciTech | No Comments

Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems Inc, is currently trying to bring to life The BrainGate Neural Interface. Combining computer science and engineering the company develops products for emerging neurotechnology markets.

The technology is being developed in order to provide communication interfaces for the individuals who had severe motor disabilities giving them the ability to control their environment and why not truly believe that one day they can regain full movement.

Taking into account that neurons are cells that use a language of electrical impulses to communicate messages from the brain to the rest of the body, the technology provided by Cyberkinetics is able to sense, transmit, analyze and apply the language of neurons.

The developed device is 4 by 4 millimeter arrangement of 100 electrodes. It is surgically implanted in the motor cortex and is meant to connect to a small platform from the patient’s skull that is linked to an external processor. The chip should be able to detect and send signals from the motor cortex to the processor which is the actual translator, feeding the interpreted data to a computer.

There have been signs of such technology success along with positive feedback. A few people suffering from paralysis have been already implanted such small device and the results have been encouraging enough. Technology and science are on the move bringing all new kind of discoveries meant to improve our living. What comes next?
