As we said in a previous news, AMD released more information about their new socket named AM2.
It seems that AMD is working hard to release this new socket as soon as possible, so, the system builders will be able to purchase the new AM2 processor starting on May 15th. Dual core and single core Athlon 64 processors will be available as well as 64-bit Sempron processors.
The AMD’s Athlon 64 FX-62 will be the company’s top desktop offering for the remainder of the year, and only in Q1 of 2007 we will witness the release of Athlon 64 FX-64. Regarding the AM2, it’s under embargo until June 6, this year, so no AM2 in our computers until June.
<>Also, we were able to find some prices for the new sockets, and here they are:
- Athlon 64 FX-62 – $1,236
- Athlon 64 X2 4800+ – $645
- Athlon 64 3800+ – $290
- Sempron 3600+ – $123
The above prices are SSBP (System Suggested Builder Prices), meaning how much we pay for such a processor. The manufacturers of systems buy the processors with 10% less.
The new processors will have a new packaging system and of course, new heatpipes coolers, which will have to dissipate all that heat.
And a good news at the end. The motherboards for this processors will be available with several weeks in advance, so as soon as the processors will be available in stores, it can be mounted in the computer.
