In an recent interview for 1Up.com, Phil Harrison, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, said that movies and TV shows will soon be able available for download to Playstation 3 users.
This move comes as a normal response to Microsoft service Xbox Live Video Market place which was launched a year after Microsoft introduced the Xbox 360 game console. Although Microsoft has a headstart with it’s video download service, it shouldn’t be a problem for Sony to catch up as it’s back up its by Sony Music and Sony Pictures divisions.
In response to the interviewer’s question of whether people could expect to see downloadable TV and movies on the PlayStation Network, Harrison words were “we have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly.”
The new service comes as Sony prepares to launch the Playstation 3 in Europe and Australia in March, after releasing the console in North America and Japan in November.
The PS3 also sports a built-in Blu-ray player, while Microsoft offers an option HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360.
