Winamp 5.111 is the latest release of the well-known, free music player. The free Winamp includes AOL’s Radio Featuring XM, SHOUTcast Wire Podcast Directory and Predixis MusicMagic Playlists and limited ripping to 2x speeds. For $19.95, Winamp Pro encodes music into aacPlus, MP3, WMA and AAC.
Firstly, Winamp’s setup is relatively small-just under 6 MB for the free full version. And it could have been even smaller if it didn’t include the “100 FREE MP3s from eMusic!” shortcut or other such unwanted info.
The six main windows of Winamp have been slightly modified and now offer a better, larger view (great news for users used with high resolutions). The main window offers access to over 50 color themes, suiting nearly every mood or occasion. The Window Shade is still, almost with no real purpose, hiding the only window that links all the others as well as the info of the played song.
Even though the Winamp Library is a powerful media management tool, it doesn’t bring a lot of changes. The Predixis Smart Playlist Generator analyzes the music collection and builds custom mixes for hours of listening enjoyment, while over 4000 Internet Radio stations and 40 Internet TV channels ensure a wide variety of multimedia to choose from.
Winamp’s flexible skinning coupled with Winamp Video, Winamp Visualizations (over 100 bundled visualization presets created by users) and the Winamp Equalizer (select from dozens of EQ presets ) deliver high quality sound and video, without lacking good looks.

Accordingly, the new improved Winamp is far from being perfect (still doesn’t resolve the memory footprint issue) but with constant feedback and attention it should grow to suit ever demanding needs.
