Motorola Unveils HotZone Duo

Motorola today introduced its HotZone Duo solution, a high performance, cost-effective meshed Wi-Fi network, that provides scalable, area-wide wireless broadband access to large and small municipalities.

The HotZone Duo solution is designed to maximize throughput and coverage, and can deliver the connectivity needed by municipalities while, at the same time, meeting aggressive cost and return on investment (ROI) targets.

The solution is part of Motorola’s MOTOwi4(TM) portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services that creates, complements and completes IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes Fixed Broadband, Mesh, Broadband over Powerline, and WiMAX solutions for private and public networks. The HotZone Duo solution is expected to be available in the third quarter in North America.

Utilizing two radios enables dedicated user accessibility on one channel by carrying all network backhaul traffic on the other. This configuration can increase throughput by up to 100 percent, and dramatically reduce packet latency and interference issues. High performance radios deliver 36 dBm EIRP, the maximum legal transmit power, and -100dbm receiver sensitivity to maximize coverage and minimize nodes per square mile.

Apopka is the first city to offer its citizens Wi-Fi access using a beta system deployment of the HotZone Duo solution.

“Offering high speed Wi-Fi access to our citizens, businesses and city agencies in Apopka is a high priority for us in 2006,” said Mr. Richard Anderson, city administrator, Apopka. “As the second largest city in Orange County, we knew we needed a state-of-the-art system to give us the capacity and scalability to serve our community. Motorola’s HotZone Duo solution gives us the performance and flexibility we need, in a form factor smaller than a shoe box — all designed and installed by Motorola, it was win, win, win all the way around.”

“Progressive cities like Apopka will deploy HotZone Duo networks to help boost economic development, enhance delivery of government services and provide greater citizen access to broadband services,” said Eduardo Conrado, vice president of marketing and communication, Motorola Networks and Enterprise. “HotZone Duo makes delivering secure and scalable citywide Wi-Fi access easy and cost effective.”
