IBM brings out on the market a new technology called SecureBlue.
Defined as a compromise between a set of encryption circuitry, SecureBlue can be directly integrated into a computer’s CPU. As hackers can intercept data sent to the main processor, the actual creators of this project thought the best way of securing the data is to provide the CPU with new type of encryption .
Other major players on the market, like Intel for example, use TPM (Trust Platform Module) which in IBM’s opinion does not provide the best encryption as their all-in-one latest solution. The company has also thought of securing other devices like cell phones or portable music players. The encryption can be used in order to lock down audio and video downloads, making sure the data is protected all the time.
What do experts have to say about the integrated encryption. Most of them agree that the new technology can provide better performance. What they question is the higher level of security provided in comparison to platforms like TPM or PGP.
On the other hand, the data on stolen computers is harder to access as the encrypted chip cannot be bypassed by physical means. How many companies are going to use SecureBlue? As it has to be added into a processor during its creation, so far it looks like only IBM is going to use it for a while.
