Indeed, Nvidia and Intel signed and agreement that will allow them to unite their technologies for a better 3D gaming performance and multimedia platform to handheld platforms.
Nvidia will combine the processing capabilities of its GoForce family of handheld graphic processing units (GPU) with the Intel’s newest processor family (named Monahans). These processors are based on the third generation Intel Xscale architecture. These combined will allow them to deliver a powerful development platform to content developers.
“Increased global demand for high quality digital media on the move is driving a dramatic increase in the adoption of multimedia processing technology for the wireless market segment,” said Mark Casey, general manager of Intel’s Applications Processor Business Unit. “The Monahans platform family and NVIDIA GoForce family of processors have both been architected with this steep growth curve in mind, and their combination will support exceptional 3D and multimedia capabilities in handheld devices.”
“By working together, Intel and NVIDIA have been able to leverage their respective investments in the mobile market to enable outstanding battery life while delivering world class digital media content and high performance levels,” said Philip Carmack, senior vice president of the handheld GPU group at NVIDIA. “The end result of this collaboration is a solution that provides developers and end users with an exciting platform for mobile 3D gaming and multimedia content enjoyment.”
The Monahans platform family (which was believed it will be replaced by LPIA technology and it works at 1.25Ghz, more then double speed compared to their ex Bulverde processors, but only 25% more performance) will offer a wide range of performance, power and integration levels to help meet the needs of mobile phones, portable gaming devices, personal media players and other consumer electronic devices. The NVIDIA GoForce family of handheld GPUs, including the recently launched NVIDIA GoForce 5500 (it was launched in 14 February 2006), enables advanced multimedia features such as digital TV, advanced photo imaging, surround sound audio, and 3D gaming on next-generation handheld devices. It has high-def images and video (up to 1024*768), 10 megapixel camera support, and the gamers can enjoy it, since it you play Quake 3 at the same quality as the Play Station users.
