Bram Cohem, the BitTorrent technology’s creator, agreed with Hollywood studios to help find pirated digital content online.
“BitTorrent Inc. discourages the use of its technology for distributing films without a license to do so,” Cohen said in a statement. “As such, we are pleased to work with the film industry to remove unauthorized content from BitTorrent.com’s search engine.”
Hollywood and Bram Cohen agreed to find pirated copies of movies online. A new service has been launched on Cohen website that searches file downloads that use the BitTorrent technology. Cohen is also united with the Motion Picture Association of America in the fight against piracy.
BitTorrent is both the protocol and the name of the peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution application created by Bram Cohen that makes it possible to massively distribute files without incurring the corresponding massive consumption in server and bandwidth resources. The bittorrent protocol breaks the file(s) down into smaller fragments, typically 256 KB in size. Peers download missing fragments from each other and upload those that they already have to peers that request them. The protocol is ’smart’ enough to choose the peer with the best network connections for the fragments that it’s requesting.
Even-tough he’s technology is used primarly for illegal and pirated digital content traffic, Cohen has an important role in the peer-to-peer world for several years.
“We are glad that Bram Cohen and his company are working with us to limit access to infringing files on the BitTorrent.com Web site,” MPAA Chief Executive Officer Dan Glickman said in a statement. “They are leading the way for other companies by their example.”
