A new era for hackers is opening up as they have started using the DNS servers in favor of their attacks.
What was believed to be safe, the DNS servers are now used by hackers for their attacks. VeriSign for example, a company which helps other companies use the Web for business stated that early this year had to face the largest attacks ever made on its systems.
To the company’s surprise its machines were attacked by DNS servers and not some “botâ€Â? computers, what hackers usually use.
If in the beginning such attacks were considered to be unimportant as they were generated by kids “playing around the Web, now they became a tool for criminals generally in search of making more money through illegal ways.
The systems under attack, which could be either a Web server, name server or mail server, are “boomed with data coming from multiple systems around the Web. The target becomes thus unreachable online as the data connection is flooded. By crashing the the data connection hackers get control of the incoming data.
Using the DNS servers, hackers actually get privacy, as the server hides their systems making it more difficult for the victim to trace the origin of the attack. Going further, the attacks are also amplified as the DNS server assures a larger amount of malicious traffic to the target.
The problem is as serious as possible as attackers keep finding new ways in order to reach their purpose, using as many tools as they can just to make sure that they get where they want to.
