From now on Google Print enables users to search books provided by publishers in each of the countries mentioned as well as English-language books in the Google library.
At this point, the new sites can search a relatively small number of books as a Susan Wojcicki, vice president for product management at Google, said on an interview. The content of these books was scanned since August, when the company, seeking to expand its online book program, began approaching European publishers.
This week in Germany, a special event is going to happen. The Frankfurt Book Fair, one of the largest annual gatherings of publishers, agents and authors and also a good place for Google to present its project. A Google executive is scheduled to take part in a three-hour panel discussion at this event.
Users will have the same benefits from these websites as those who use the .com website. They will get informations about books, sometimes they can see some pages of those books as well as bibliographic information and link to retailers that will sell the book directly to the user. Eventually, the European sites will give users access to data about foreign-language books in the collections of the New York Public Library and the university libraries of Stanford, Harvard, Michigan and Oxford.
Grupo Planeta and Grupo Anaya of Spain, De Boeck and Editions De L’Eclat of France and Springer Science & Business Media of Holland agreed to collaborate with Google.
Google Print started a huge controversy since its announcement in August 2004. This tool searches the contents of books submitted by publishers and displays matches above web matches on the search result page. It offers links to purchase the book, as well as content-related advertisements. Google will limit the number of viewable pages from any book through user-tracking. As of early January 2005, this service remains in the beta stage.
