In the past week, most Chinese couldn’t access google.com.
This move comes after the Chinese government released an “approved” version of google. Launched in January, google.cn is the only version of google that works without a problem. But if want to search here terms like Tiananmen Square massacre or some dissidents, you will get no results because they are blocked.
Reporters Without Borders accused Google to join the companies that complied with Chinese government to impose restrictions if they want to operate in China. Yahoo helped the Chinese governement with informations about several journalists which were arrested with Yahoo’s help.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin acknowledged that the company has compromised its principles by accommodating Chinese censorship demands and that now they are trying to get things as they were before. Brin said Google had agreed to the censorship demands only after Chinese authorities blocked its service.
It seems that indeed on May 31 google.com was blocked and no chinese could use it.
“We felt that perhaps we could compromise our principles but provide ultimately more information for the Chinese and be a more effective service and perhaps make more of a difference,” Brin said.
“It’s perfectly reasonable to do something different, to say, ‘Look, we’re going to stand by the principle against censorship and we won’t actually operate there.’ That’s an alternate path,” Brin said. “It’s not where we chose to go right now, but I can sort of see how people came to different conclusions about doing the right thing.”
“Don’t be evil”, Google’s motto was broke. Google was evil in China. we will see what will happen next.
