A few weeks after the chip maker AMD has announced that it had finalized the takeover of ATi, the Canadian graphics expert, sad news comes from AMD, as it decided to end the 21 years of ATi brand-history.

Gareth Cater from AMD told Custom PC that “the new company will be called AMD.” This further confirms the fact that AMD has actually taken over ATi and that the two companies have not merged. While there are companies carrying the name of both of their “parents”, like Fujitsu-Siemens, BenQ-Siemens or Sony Ericsson, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

The re-branding of ATi may be great opportunity for AMD to advertise its newly widen products range under a single brand-name. This doesn’t concern too much the final consumer who was accustomed with the ATi brand and its products and a different name for the same products may create confusion and loose of trust.

The same Custom PC asked Richard Baker from AMD if the memorable Radeon name will also be forgotten by AMD, and the answer was that “we haven’t made any final decisions yet, but I’d personally be very surprised if we dropped any of those product names. The ATi company name is definitely going, though.”

Chris Hook, from ATi added: “I don’t have a personal emotional attachment to it [the brand], one way or another. I think the important thing is that we’re going to make good products. ATi may be gone, but certainly lots of discussion is going to come over the next few days about the rest of our brands and their strengths.”
