It seems that Google is playing with GDrive for internal purposes.
If you would to visit this particular website you would found that GDrive or Platypus is used by Googles employees.
Here is what Platypus(GDrive) offers:
- Backup. If you lose your computer, grab a new one and reinstall Platypus. Your files will be on your new machine in minutes.
- Sync. Keep all your machines synchronized, even if they run different operating systems.
- VPN-less access. Not at a Google computer? View your files on the web at http://troutboard.com/p.
- Collaborate. Create shared spaces to which multiple Googlers can write.
- Disconnected access. On the plane? VPN broken? All your files are still accessible.
It seems that Platypus is a working version of GDrive but is used by employee. Maybe it’s cheaper that way since your own people are testing it.
You will be able to sync your data so you can access it from everywhere. No matter if you are at your friend’s house and he needs some files or a software from your computer or you forgot to bring your data from home, you can easily access it.
The news about GDrive surfaced 4 months ago. Until now, people are wondering how safe will be the data that you will upload. Can you be sure if Google won’t use them as if they owned it?
We will have to wait and see if this idea will be available one day and what implications will it have.
