The action against Fujitsu-Siemens was filed in Hamburg, Germany and alleges that certain computer products sold by Fujitsu-Siemens infringe the Company’s European Clipper system patent.

The action against NEC and Toshiba was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and alleges that certain computer products sold by NEC, Toshiba, and various subsidiaries and affiliates infringe the Company’s family of Clipper system patents.

The Clipper architecture is a 32-bit RISC-like instruction set architecture microprocessor chip-set designed by Fairchild Semiconductor. But Fairchild sold the division responsible for Clipper to Intergraph in 1987 and Intergraph continued work on Clipper processors for use in its own systems.

Intergraph started work on a subsequent Clipper processor design known as the C5, but this was never completed or released. Nonetheless, some advanced processor design techniques were devised for the C5, and Intergraph was granted patents on these. These patents, along with the original Clipper patents, have been the basis of patent-infringement lawsuits by Intergraph against Intel and other companies (like the ones mentioned in this article).
