Although the attack was discovered in July, it only came to public attention last week. The attack was aimed at the Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) which is responsible for export control and treaty compliance.

“The BIS discovered a targeted effort in July to gain access to user accounts, and we took immediate steps to ensure no information was comprised,” said Richard Mills, a spokesman for the Commerce Department.

An August email from acting Undersecretary of Commerce Mark Foulon quoted by the Washington Post said that BIS “had identified several successful attempts to attack unattended BIS workstations during the overnight hours.”

Although there is no evidence that any BIS data has been compromised, according to Richard Mills, the Internet access has been restricted to standalone workstations that are not connected to the bureau’s other internal servers.

The official noted that the attack originated in China and it was traced back to an Internet service provider based in China.

In July, the State Department said that Chinese attackers had broken into its systems overseas and in Washington. This makes the attack on BIS the second major attack originating in China that has been acknowledged by the federal government since July.
